JASIN: A 54-year-old man and his niece were among three individuals detained by police for the alleged possession of a firearm and ammunition without a valid licence following a raid at a house along Jalan Bemban here.

Jasin OCPD Supt Lee Robert said the operation was carried out by his team at about 5.30pm on Sunday (Jan 4) following information received from the public.

He said the arrests involved two local men aged 54 and 45, as well as a 22-year-old local woman.

"An inspection at a house led to the discovery of a shotgun along with several spent bullet casings placed on a table beneath the garage of the house,” he said on Monday (Jan 5).

Following the discovery, Supt Lee said all three suspects were detained on suspicion of possessing a firearm and ammunition without a valid licence or permit.

He said items seized during the raid included a brown-coloured shotgun, a firearm handguard, a cartridge belt, as well as several 12-bore bullet casings.

He added that preliminary investigations revealed that the female suspect is the niece of the 54-year-old male suspect.

"Record checks found that the two male suspects have three and seven previous records respectively involving criminal and drug-related offences, while the female suspect has no prior criminal record,” he said.

Supt Lee added that all three suspects have been remanded for three days to assist investigations under Section 8(a) of the Firearms Act 1960 for possession of a firearm without a licence.
