Airports  ready to handle surge in passenger volume

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia ushered in Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026) at the stroke of midnight on Dec 31, with coordinated welcome ceremonies at airports nationwide, signalling the country’s readiness for a surge in travellers.

Malaysia Airports said its airport network is fully prepared to handle increased passenger volumes while maintaining consistent service standards at all entry points.

Its managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the group’s priority this year is to manage rising traffic while ensuring dependable performance across the network.

“All our airports operate under a coordinated nationwide framework to ensure the same service standards at every entry point.

“Our focus is on efficient use of assets, stable operating processes and close coordination with airline partners to support connectivity growth, manage peak flows effectively and deliver airport operations that meet international expectations,” he said in a statement yesterday.

As part of these preparations, the statement said airports nationwide underwent targeted upgrades in 2025, with extensive modernisation works at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) forming the centrepiece of the programme.

Across KLIA Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, more than 30 improvement initiatives were implemented to create a more seamless and inclusive passenger experience.

These included upgraded passenger processing systems, expanded self-service facilities, refreshed public amenities as well as enhanced commercial offerings.

Key initiatives included upgraded check-in and open bag-drop kiosks, a vehicle access management system to improve kerbside traffic flow and the addition of 12,500 new passenger trolleys, 100 complimentary wheelchairs and 210 baby strollers.

Other enhancements comprised family-friendly washrooms, refurbished open-concept waiting lounges, upgraded surau facilities and the introduction of a Calm Room at Terminal 2 for passengers with hidden disabilities.

Malaysia Airports said it has also accelerated upgrades at other airports, including Penang International Airport, Kota Kinabalu International Airport and selected domestic gateways.

“Beyond infrastructure, VM2026 also brings an expanded commercial experience, with a broader mix of local and international retail and food and beverage offerings, experiential pop-ups and travel essentials across the airport network,” it added.
