Greed, corruption goes against the people's mandate, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Any intention fuelled by a desire for position or power goes against the people’s mandate, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal warns his party leaders and members.

The Warisan president said that in the recently concluded state election, Warisan was the single party that garnered the most seats.

However, he advised members and leaders not to grow complacent and to instead use the opportunity to learn and achieve greater success in the upcoming general election.

“We got 25 out of 73 seats; this is the most that a single party won in the state election. I foresee a better future and achievements for (Warisan),” he said while officiating the party convention on Saturday (Dec 20).

Shafie said that those who won big majorities should continue to consistently work on the ground for the people and not their personal interests.

He also acknowledged that cooperation with the Federal Government was important, but said Sabah’s homegrown leadership knew the state’s needs best.

On the direction the party was taking, Shafie said it was important to give chances for young leaders to grow.

“We need to ‘grow younger.’ I told my deputy Datuk Darell Leiking that if anything happens to me, he must take over.

“He (Darell) said no, but I told him he must have confidence because I won’t be here forever and we must be prepared,” Shafie said.
