Johor floods: Number of evacuees in Mersing goes up slightly


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood victims seeking shelter at two temporary flood relief centres (PPS) in the Mersing district have slightly increased.

The state disaster management committee said the number had risen to 240 people from 70 families as of 4pm Wednesday (Dec 17) compared with 204 victims from 56 families at 2pm.

“Kampung Baru Air Tawar is the latest village to be hit by floods, bringing the total number of affected villages to three now," it said in the statement.

The statement said 111 victims from 35 families from the village have joined 129 victims from 35 families from Kampung Baru Air Tawar and Kampung Hubong at the two centres.

The centres are at SK Pusat Air Tawar and SJKC Chiao Ching, which were opened at 5am and 11am, respectively.

The statement said Sungai Muar at Segamat Kecil stood at 37.18m, exceededing the danger level of 36.70m.

The other two rivers are at warning levels – Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat, Segamat at 19.53m (danger level at 19.95m) and Sungai Lenit Ladang Chaah, Batu Pahat at 6.83m with the danger level at 7.0m.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued continuous heavy rain and thunderstorm warnings in Segamat, Kluang, Mersing and Kota Tinggi until Thursday (Dec 18).
