To the rescue: Muhd Sufi is ready to help humans and animals like he did during the floods in 2023.
BATU PAHAT: The boats have been checked, fully fuelled and ready, and Muhd Sufi Sharifudin stands prepared to head out on rescue missions when floods strike.
The 31-year-old fisherman has been closely monitoring water levels in nearby rivers following days of heavy rain.
“It has been raining very heavily for two days, and the water levels are rising steadily.
“Looks like a flood could happen soon, especially when we are in the rainy season.
“Although the weather has improved this morning, the risk is still there and I will remain on high alert,” he said yesterday.
Muhd Sufi is known among local villagers for braving floodwaters to assist both residents and animals since 2023.
His flood relief efforts began when victims from nearby Sri Medan requested help relocating to higher ground, knowing he had three boats at his disposal.
“After responding to that first plea, I realised I cannot just sit and see people suffering whenever a flood strikes.
“I would jump into my boat to reach those who need help, and that’s why I am on standby now,” he said.
Muhd Sufi said his village is not at risk of floods, but there are several flood-prone areas nearby.
“Come year-end, these areas will always be affected by floods. It is just a matter of whether it’s a minor or major one.
“I really hope it will not be serious this year,” he said.
