Warm up: Pajudin (left) and Liam are ready for the real test.
KOTA KINABALU: Two prospective candidates turned up at a nomination centre for a “dry run” of the nomination process, offering first-timers a glimpse of what to expect ahead of the big day today.
Parti Impian Sabah’s Pajudin Nordin and Liam Tawil were present at the nomination centre for the four seats in Tuaran, quietly getting familiar with the process before stepping into their first electoral contest.
For Pajudin, 56, the task ahead is formidable – he is challenging Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in Sulaman (N12).
“Facing the CM won’t be easy,” he said when met at the centre yesterday, acknowledging both the odds and the symbolism of the challenge.
“This is my first time contesting because I see many things that need to change. The people want change,” he said.
Pajudin, who cut his teeth in politics through PKR “from opposition days to the current Madani government”, said everyday issues still dominate life in Sulaman – unreliable roads, water supply, electricity and rural communities lacking support.
“These issues have been raised for years,” he said.
“We feel they haven’t been managed well, so we’re offering solutions. Poverty remains high in Sulaman.
“Our manifesto stresses fairness for everyone, regardless of race or religion.”
For 69-year-old Tuaran native and retired civil servant Liam, he is equally focused as he prepares to contest Pantai Dalit.
“We came to settle the deposit payment and run checks so there’s nothing to worry about on nomination day. It’s my first time contesting, but I’ve served the district for 43 years. Now I want to bring our mission and vision to the people.”
Liam said Impian Sabah’s goals include serving all communities and improving existing development, adding, “If we’re chosen, we’ll do our best.”
Returning officer Ibrahim Terki said each of the four seats – Sulaman, Pantai Dalit, Tamparuli and Kiulu – is expected to see at least five candidates contesting, based on more than 25 nomination forms sold so far, including to buyers from outside the district.
He said preparations, simulations and safety arrangements have been completed.
“Police have advised all parties to limit supporter turnout at Padang Istiadat and Dewan Seri Sulaman to avoid overcrowding, which is estimated could exceed 10,000 people.
“We want nomination day to run well, without any untoward incidents,” he added.
