Popular gaming platforms are among the new approaches proposed by the Communications Ministry to promote patriotism among young Malaysians.
Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said younger generations, particularly those from generations Z and Alpha, communicate in ways that differ significantly from older Malaysians.
Because of this, he said the delivery of patriotic messages should be tailored to their language, media consumption habits and how they receive information.
“In the past, we may have relied on briefings and lectures, but for Gen Z and Gen Alpha, we may need to speak their language.
“That is why the ministry, through the Information Department and other agencies, must adapt the way it communicates messages about patriotism and love for the country,” he said.
Citing the popularity of games such as Roblox, Fahmi said such digital spaces could be explored as tools to spark and strengthen the patriotic spirit.
He said this in response to a supplementary question from Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang), who asked about measures to boost patriotism among younger generations.
Fahmi added leveraging on popular online environments like games could be effective in engaging youngsters and nurturing a stronger sense of national identity.
Generation Z, also known as Zoomers, refers to those born between 1997 and 2012, who are widely regarded as the first “digital native” generation, having grown up with the Internet.
The generation after Gen Z is known as Gen Alpha, comprising those born from the early 2010s to the mid-2020s.
