Sibu cops nab 221 in month-long anti-drug ops


SIBU: A total of 221 individuals were arrested in a month-long anti-drug operation called Ops Tapis Nakotic carried out between Oct 6 and Nov 6.

Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Zulkipli Suhaili said the arrests involved 206 men and 15 women, including three foreign nationals, following 256 cases opened under various provisions of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and the Poisons Act 1952.

“During this period, our narcotics team successfully arrested one suspect under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, 11 under Section 39A(1), 27 under Section 12(3), one under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act 1952, and 181 drug addicts under Section 15(1)(a),” he said in a statement on Friday (Nov 7).

Police also seized 3,163.55g of suspected syabu worth RM120,214.90 during the operation.

According to ACP Zulkipli, 246 cases have since been brought to court.

These include one case under Section 39B, seven cases under Section 39A(1), 25 under Section 12(3), one under Section 30(3) of the Poisons Act, and 212 individuals charged under Section 15(1)(a).

Ten suspects remain under remand to assist further investigations.

He added that five individuals were also charged under Section 39C(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of up to five years’ imprisonment and one term of police supervision.

ACP Zulkipli stressed that police will continue to clamp down on drug distribution and abuse in the district.

“The Royal Malaysia Police, especially the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department, remain committed to intensifying operations to break the chain of drug distribution and addiction. We urge members of the public to come forward with any information related to drug activities,” he said.

He also called on the public to provide information on drug activity to the JSJN hotline at 012-208 7222 (Bukit Aman) or 017-592 9211 (Sarawak JSJN).
