Kapit to be modern township in five years, says Sarawak Premier

KAPIT: Kapit is expected to become a modern township within five years as the Sarawak state government moves ahead with major infrastructure projects, said Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Speaking at a gathering with the Kapit community on Thursday (Nov 6), he said a total of RM1.96bil had been allocated to upgrade the division’s water supply system, alongside plans to further expand electricity coverage.

“To develop Kapit, we must have a strategic plan that ensures reliable basic amenities,” he said.

He said the main road network had already reached Kapit and the next phase would focus on feeder and spur roads linking the surrounding areas.

Projects approved include a new administrative complex, upgraded roads, and new jetties in Pelagus and Bakun to support new economic activities such as a solar farm.

Abang Johari said the government would also proceed with the RM122mil road to Merirai and another RM122mil for the road to a Rumah Panjang area, along with a tunnel project which was previously delayed.

The Premier added that new settlement areas and land lots would be provided to support veterans and riverine communities.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to improve statewide connectivity, including a new route linking Miri, Marudi, Long Terawan, Mulu and eventually Kapit and Belaga.

“With roads, water and electricity being put in place, our next focus is to raise household incomes,” he said, noting that free tertiary education for eligible Sarawakians will begin next year to boost human capital.

“Kapit is part of this overall development plan,” he said.
