Sample taken from dead dog to check for poison

BALIK PULAU: The Penang Veterinary Services Department has collected samples from one of the six dead dogs amid allegations of poisoning near the Balik Pulau bus terminal in Jalan Tun Sardon here.

Its director Dr Saira Banu Mohamed Rejab said only one carcass was taken for examination as the rest were believed to have been buried by those who discovered them.

“Our team has carried out an investigation at the site and collected specimens that could assist in the probe.

“The samples, taken from the dog’s intestines, will be sent to the Chemistry Department to determine whether the animal was poisoned. A post-mortem will also be conducted,” she said.

Animal activist David Yim Boon Leong highlighted the case on his Facebook page, saying the six dead dogs were found by a volunteer who had been feeding the animals in the area.

He also claimed that another stray dog was recently poisoned in Changkat Minden, Gelugor.

The volunteer, K. Meenachi, 51, said she was saddened by the incident on Tuesday.
