Education Ministry projects recruitment of 200 new Chinese language teachers this year, Parliament told

KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry has reaffirmed that Chinese language classes can be held in national-type secondary schools (Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan) if there is a minimum demand from 15 parents, in line with the Education Act 1996 (Act 550).

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry remains committed to providing balanced access to education regardless of race, status, or background.

“To support the teaching and learning of the Chinese language in secondary schools, the ministry has projected the recruitment of 200 new Chinese language teachers for 2025,” she said in a written reply to Tanjung Piai MP Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng.

However, she said the appointments would depend on the number of applications received.

“The ministry is committed to ensuring equal access to education for all students. Therefore, Chinese language classes are open to all SMK schools, as long as the required conditions are met,” she added.

Wee had asked the ministry to clarify the challenges in implementing Chinese language classes in national secondary schools and the immediate intervention measures to ensure fair access to education.
