Sabah must maintain momentum and not start over, says Bangkuai

KOTA KINABALU: It is not the time to start over as Sabah’s development is moving in the right direction, says Datuk Joniston Bangkuai.

The Gabungan Rakyat Sabah and Parti Bersatu Sabah information chief said many development outcomes are already visible over the past five years.

“Sabah has seen results from consistent and mature engagement with the Federal Government under the GRS administration,” he said.

Bangkuai said this positive momentum must continue to preserve the stability and maturity that enable steady progress through constructive dialogue and practical cooperation by GRS.

He said this has strengthened Sabah’s position in federal discussions and delivered tangible development benefits to the state.

“For the state and federal to move together, it takes two to tango,” he said.

He said progress is achieved when both sides share mutual respect and a common goal for people’s well-being.

Speaking to constituents at Kampung Sinulihan, the incumbent Kiulu assemblyman said constructive politics is about balance.

He said leaders must know when to speak firmly and when to engage meaningfully to achieve results.

Bangkuai said political differences are part of democracy, but Sabahans must reject divisive sentiments.

He said such sentiments wrongly portray collaboration as weakness or submission.

“We must be pragmatic,” he said.

He said national policies are decided at the federal level and Sabah must continue to play an active role there.

“Building bridges ensures our voice is heard and our needs are addressed,” he said.

He said walls that cut Sabah off from progress must be avoided.

Bangkuai reiterated Parti Bersatu Sabah’s commitment to educating people on their rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

He said the party’s consistent efforts have deepened public understanding of Sabah’s standing.

“That is PBS’s biggest contribution,” he said.

He said it empowers the rakyat and promotes unity and constructive participation.

He added that with progress taking shape, Sabah must safeguard the spirit of continuity that brought it this far.

“Sabah is moving in the right direction. This is not the time to start all over again,” he added.
