KUCHING: Malaysians should explore the country’s rich diversity and unique attractions to strengthen domestic tourism ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026, says Datin Rafidah Idris.
“By travelling within our country, we help grow an economy that benefits local communities and celebrates our rich diversity,” she said.
“This is the essence of Cuti Cuti Malaysia, to explore, experience and be inspired by the beauty that surrounds us,” added Rafidah
The Tourism Malaysia deputy director general said Budget 2026 offers income tax relief of up to RM1,000 for entrance fees to local attractions and cultural programmes.
She said this will further encourage Malaysians to travel domestically.
“In line with this initiative, I urge everyone to plan your next Malaysian experience,” she said on Saturday (Oct 18).
“With almost 70 exhibitors here, you can explore Malaysia in one place through travel deals, crafts and cuisines from Sarawak and beyond,” she added.
She spoke at the launch of Star Karnival Cuti Cuti Malaysia 2025 Sarawak at Plaza Merdeka, Kuching.
She described Sarawak as one of Malaysia’s most captivating destinations, known for natural wonders, vibrant cultures and warm hospitality.
“Here in the Land of the Hornbills, we see how each state contributes to Malaysia’s tapestry of beauty and identity,” she said.
“Sarawak is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Gunung Mulu National Park and Niah National Park,” she added.
She said Kuching is recognised as a World Craft City and a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.
Rafidah said these achievements position Sarawak as a hub of traditional artistry, fine heritage crafts and exquisite food culture.
She encouraged visitors to experience Sarawak’s local way of life.
Rafidah then cited signature dishes like kolo mee, laksa Sarawak and kek lapis, and longhouse homestays offering a glimpse into Iban culture.
She said the Cuti-Cuti Malaysia Carnival comprises six events nationwide in Sabah, Sarawak and the Northern, Southern, Central and East Coast regions.
“We still have three more to go this year, and I am delighted to be here in Sarawak,” she said.
“The response has been fantastic with 74 exhibitors, a great achievement for our first carnival here,” she added.
Rafidah said Tourism Malaysia began engagement sessions across all six regions since January.
“This year, we focus on strengthening the backbone of the tourism industry. It is not only about attracting international visitors, we also want Malaysians to explore their own country,” she added.
She said there is much to discover within Malaysia itself.
Rafidah thanked Star Media Group and industry partners for collaborating to promote domestic tourism through the carnival.
“This public private partnership aims to reignite Malaysians’ interest in travelling domestically,” she said.
“It reminds us of hidden treasures waiting to be rediscovered,” she added.
The three day Star Karnival Cuti Cuti Malaysia 2025 Sarawak runs from October 17 to 19 at Plaza Merdeka, Kuching.
It showcases tourism, culture, food and lifestyle under one roof.
Co organised by Tourism Malaysia and Star Media Group, the series is themed “Explore. Experience. Excite.”
It aims to spur local tourism while celebrating unity and diversity.
The event features 74 booths in total, including 28 by hotels and resorts, 26 showcasing local crafts and 20 highlighting food and beverages.
Around 20,000 to 30,000 visitors are expected to attend the roadshow, which runs from 10am to 9pm.
