PUTRAJAYA: A total of 61 school projects nationwide are expected to be completed and handed over to the Education Ministry next year, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.

He said most of the projects involved the construction of new school complexes and additional blocks to address student overcrowding.

Nanta said that under the 12th Malaysia Plan, a total of 1,251 school projects worth RM32.63bil have been planned.

Of these, 309 projects have been completed, while another 454 are under construction, Bernama reported.

“A total of 321 projects are still in the planning stage, 79 are in the procurement process, 82 are in the design stage and six projects are in the re-tendering process,” he said after attending the handover of the Precinct 15 school complex here yesterday.

Commenting on the school complex, Nanta said it was built at a cost of RM117mil and completed 45 days ahead of schedule, thanks to the use of the Industrialised Building System (IBS).

“Government policy stipulates that all projects must comply with at least 70% IBS usage.

For projects implemented by the Public Works Department, we ensure this percentage is met, except for projects located in very remote areas,” the Works Minister said.

Meanwhile, Education Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Aminuddin Hassim said the Putrajaya Precinct 15 school complex is equipped with 36 classrooms for primary students and 42 for secondary students, as well as preschool facilities.

“The Putrajaya district education office will mobilise teachers in preparation to welcome the first batch of students in January next year,” he said.
