Tourism sector gets RM700mil

JOHOR BARU: The RM700mil allocation for the tourism industry is reflective of the government’s commitment to elevating the sector.

Tourism groups here welcomed the government’s allocation, while noting that it is among the highest the sector has ever received.

Malaysian Tourist Guides Council president Jimmy Leong said the allocation channelled under Budget 2026 showed the government’s seriousness in supporting tourism.

“I believe it is one of the highest allocations we have received under a national budget, and that is a good sign for the tourism industry.

“We also welcome the RM500mil allocation for the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign. It is important that the ministry channels these funds to the right areas and sub-sectors,” he said in an interview.

According to Leong, one of the areas that should be given emphasis is training and upskilling tourism industry players.

“They have to look very carefully at spending on manpower.

“Having events and destinations to attract visitors is one thing, but we need people to bring them alive,” he said.

He added that allocations should also go towards organising international conferences and events that would provide good exposure for the country.

Echoing that sentiment, Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor chapter chairman Ivan Teo said investing in people is as important as upgrading facilities.

“It is also important to ensure good connectivity between states in Malaysia, making it easier for people to travel, which would make the country more attractive.”

He added it was also crucial for the ministry to target visitors from countries such as India, China and Indonesia.

“Malaysia is a Muslim country where it is easy to get halal food, making it attractive to visitors from countries like Indonesia, which is nearby.

“Meanwhile, China and India are fairly close to Malaysia and have a growing middle class. They are among the visitors we should focus on attracting,” he said.
