Accident victim under probe for smuggling cigarettes

KOTA TINGGI: In a twist of fate, an accident victim at the Senai-Desaru Highway is being investigated for allegedly being involved in transporting contraband cigarettes

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the driver of the mid-sized sports utility vehicle (SUV), who suffered major injuries, is now hospitalised at Kota Tinggi Hospital.

“The 32-year-old driver of the SUV, a Malaysian man, was involved in a three-vehicle collision,’’ he said in a statement.

Supt Yusof said the incident took place at KM56 of the Senai-Desaru Highway on Saturday (Oct 11) at 11.45am involving a Volkswagen Golf car and a Honda CR-V compact crossover.

He said the identities of the driver and three passengers of the Volkswagen Golf – all males were still unknown at press time.

“The Honda CR-V was driven by a 25-year-old local woman," said Supt Yusof.

He said the incident started when the Toyota Fortuner had entered the opposite lane from Desaru to Senai, and the Honda CR-V, which was on the lane, managed to avoid colliding with the Toyota Fortuner.

Supt Yusof said the Volkswagen Golf at the rear of the Honda CR-V was unable to avoid crashing head-on with the Toyota Fortuner.

“Motorists using the highway managed to pull out all the people from the three vehicles before they were engulfed in flames,’’ he said.

Supt Yusof said the driver and two passengers of the Volkswagen Golf died in the crash – two at the scene and one victim succumbed to his injuries while being treated at Sultan Ismail Hospital in Pandan, Johor Baru.

“The driver of the Honda CR-V escaped unhurt,’’ he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Supt Yusof appealed to witnesses or those with information on the case to contact the investigating officer, Insp Mohd Zamiruddin Yaakob at 011-39105277.
