MACC seizes assets worth RM83mil in illegal tyre imports probe

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has seized assets worth around RM83mil under it "Ops Grip" probe into tyres said to have been brought into the country illegally.

An MACC source said raids on six warehouses and shipping containers led to the seizure of over 15,000 tyres smuggled in using falsified documents, which led to the government losing around RM350mil in taxes from 2020 to 2025.

The source said the MACC had frozen several bank accounts containing funds of around RM70mil.

The source said other assets believed to have been purchased using the funds include six plots of land worth RM40.5mil, two terrace houses worth RM2mil, a townhouse worth RM2mil and a four-storey shophouse worth RM4mil.

Experts from various tyre companies were also called in to check if the tyres are genuine.

"Inspections showed that false labels and barcodes were used," said the source.

MACC special operations division senior director Datuk Mohamad Zamri Zainul Abidin confirmed the seizures.

He added that the case is still being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
