Fined RM20,000 for beating pet dog to death

IPOH: A mechanic who pleaded guilty to a charge of beating a dog to death was fined RM20,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here.

Magistrate Anis Hanini Abdullah handed down the sentence on M. Thineshkumar, 23, and also ordered that he serve one month in jail if he did not pay the fine.

He was charged with cruelly beating a male dog with an iron rod and causing injuries to it between 10.30pm and 9am on Sept 18 and 19 at a house in Lebuh Klebang Utara 30, Taman Arkid, here.

The charge was framed under Section 29(1)(a) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772), which carries a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM100,000, a maximum three-year jail term or both, upon conviction, Bernama reported.

Deputy public prosecutor Amal Aziemah Kohar pressed for an appropriate sentence to serve as a lesson.

Thineshkumar, who was unrepresented, pleaded for a minimum fine, saying he has no fixed income and has to support his parents. He also claimed that the dog had bitten him.

Based on the statement of facts, Thineshkumar struck his sister’s pet dog with an iron rod at their residence on Sept 18 but the animal did not suffer serious injuries.

The next day while his sister was at work, Thineshkumar beat the dog again, this time causing severe head injuries that led to its death.
