Motorists get three years to renew licence or lose subsidy
PUTRAJAYA: Motorists who have not renewed their driving licence three years after the expiration date will not be able to buy subsidised RON95 petrol at RM1.99.
Such driving licences would also be automatically cancelled, says Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said there are 925,421 motorists whose licences expired in the past three years, and urged them to renew them immediately.
“When a licence is not renewed, it remains active in the system for three years. Once it passes (three years), however, it will be rendered inactive and the individual will automatically lose the right to get the subsidy,” he told a press conference at the ministry’s headquarters yesterday.
According to Loke, 551,688 licences expired in the past year, 219,092 expired in the past one to two years while 154,641 motorists have licences that expired between two and three years ago.
“Those whose licences have lapsed for three years following the expiration date would also have to retake their driving test.
“Please check your licence and renew it, especially those who are closing in on the three-year mark,” he said.
Loke added that while motorists do not have to present their driving licence when refuelling, these details are already integrated into the Finance Ministry’s mechanisms.
He said that following the Monday announcement on the subsidised RON95, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had recorded up to 26,991 licence renewal transactions through various mediums such as the MyJPJ app, MySikap, kiosks and JPJ counters nationwide.
