KUALA LUMPUR: A former private TV station employee who is facing 743 charges for data tampering involving the company's customer management system is fit to stand trial, the Sessions Court was told on Monday (Sept 22).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Rohaiza Abd Rahman informed the court that the pscyhiatric evaluation for Nora Idayu Jaafar, 48, stated that the accused was mentally sound during the time of incident.
"A report from Hospital Bahagia Tanjong Rambutan, Ulu Kinta, Perak stated that between Oct 30, 2013 and Aug 20, 2020, the accused was mentally sane and aware of the nature and effect of her alleged actions.
"She is fit to stand trial and able to defend herself," DPP Rohaiza said during case mention here on Monday.
Lawyer Daniel Annamalai, who represented the accused, confirmed the matter before Sessions Court judge Suhaila Haron.
In Monday's proceedings, the court interpreter continued reading the charges against Nora Idayu.
The accused was first charged with 30 counts on June 4. She fainted during the proceedings on the day.
Due to the massive volume of the charges against her, the charge sheets had to be read in parts over separate days.
The reading continued on June 24 and took about two hours for 132 charges to be read.
The court has so far read more than 200 charges against the accused and will continue its reading on Sept 29, Sept 30 and Oct 1.
According to the charges, Nora Idayu, in her capacity as an associate with the department of commercial support unit at Astro, allegedly modified data by converting ordinary customer accounts into corporate accounts in the Astro customer management system (AMDOCS CRM), resulting in unauthorised database alterations.
The offences were allegedly committed at the Astro office at Menara Icon, Jalan Tun Razak here.
The charges, under Section 5 (1) of the Computer Crimes Act 1997, provide for a penalty of up to RM100,000 fine or imprisonment of up to seven years, or both, upon conviction.
Nora Idayu is out on a RM10,000 bail.
