PETALING JAYA: The Higher Education Ministry has directed all public universities to provide flexible registration for students affected by the floods in Sabah and Sarawak.
Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir urged affected students to contact their respective universities to update their situation.
“The universities will assist and provide sufficient leeway to ensure no student misses the opportunity to further their studies,” he said.
He advised students and parents facing flood-related challenges, particularly those about to register for public universities, not to worry.
Zambry said the ministry, together with the Malaysian Universities Volunteer Council (Maskum) and public university volunteer teams, will be mobilised to support relief efforts in the affected areas – from logistics and community assistance to post-flood recovery.
“Let’s all pray that the floods will recede soon, and the safety of the victims are guaranteed, and that the recovery process will run smoothly,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Education Ministry said students stranded and unable to attend school in Sabah and Sarawak due to floods can continue their lessons through home-based teaching and learning (PdPR).
The ministry said it is making preparations for the reopening of schools for the 2025/2026 session.
“This includes cleaning works and maintenance assistance for flood-affected schools.
“Parents, guardians, teachers, officers and support staff who are affected are requested to inform their respective schools or departments about their situation,” it said in a statement.
It also said students affected by the floods are given the flexibility to not wear school uniforms.
According to the ministry, 69 schools in Sabah and Sarawak have been affected by floods, while seven educational institutions in Sabah are operating as temporary relief centres as of Sept 19.
“Schools and district education offices are advised to obtain the latest flood situation updates from the state disaster management committee secretariat, the state Education Department and related agencies,” it said.
