PETALING JAYA: The development of 500,000 affordable homes by year-end is just a whisker away from its target, says Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming (pic).
He said as of June this year, 98.8% or 493,874 affordable houses were delivered with the remaining 6,126 units expected to be ready by the end of the year.
As for the Housing Credit Guarantee Scheme (SJKP), Nga said the scheme hit a historical high as of July 31 when a total of 93,231 applications were approved with a total financing of RM22.138bil.
He said the National Affordable Housing Council 2025 chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim yesterday discussed matters related to affordable housing, particularly on the housing ecosystem from planning to the completion as well as financial accessibility, ownership, rental and management.
Nga said the government is always committed to ensuring the housing needs of all levels of society, especially the B40 and M40 groups.
“The ministry is also actively implementing engagement sessions for the drafting of new Acts such as the Residential Rental Act and amendments and improvements to existing Acts, namely the Housing Development (Control and Licensing) Act 1966 (Act 118) and the Strata Management Act 2013 (Act 757) as well as the Urban Renewal Act 2025 to ensure sustainable, viable and inclusive development,” he said.
As for the Rumah Mesra Rakyat programme, Nga said the target would be increased to 10,000 units per year with the collaboration of various agencies including the private sector, government and NGOs.
He said there are 13,502 applications that are still awaiting offers for such units.
As for the SJKP, he said, 67% of recipients are among home buyers worth RM300,000 and below, in line with the government’s affordable housing agenda.
“The majority of approvals were given to the B40 group, which is the main target group for this scheme.”
Nga added that the ministry also intend to expand the SJKP financing initiative through a rent-to-own scheme for targeted groups.
The meeting was also attended by chief ministers, state housing excos, Cabinet ministers, private housing developers and representatives of housing provider agencies from both federal and state levels and statutory government sectors.
