One of three Papar relief centres closes as flood waters recede for 82 families

KOTA KINABALU: One of the three relief centres in Papar district was officially closed as of 4pm on Thursday (Sept 18) as the flood situation improves.

Papar district disaster management committee chairman Muhammad Mohd Ali said that all 82 victims from 25 families who were placed at the Lok Kawi Height temporary relief centre have been sent back to their homes.

"It is safe for them to return as the water levels have receded in their village," he added.

However, 3,325 victims from 964 families remain in 28 relief centres in Beaufort, Penampang, Membakut, Papar, Putatan and Sipitang as of 4pm, according to the state disaster management committee.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was expected to visit Sabah on Friday (Sept 18) to meet with victims and also assess the flood situation in the state.
