A MALAYAN tapir wandered into a durian orchard in Bentong, Pahang, but failed to find any food, Sin Chew Daily reported.
According to video footage shown by orchard owner Zou Sheng Zhe, the black and white mammal walked into his orchard at around 2am on Sept 5.
Zou believed that the animal came to look for food, however, all his durians had been sold and what remained were just husks and seeds.
“The dogs kept barking at the Malayan tapir, but that did not scare it off. It stayed there for 10 minutes before leaving,” he said.
Zou said that the dogs were fearful of the tapir due to its large size, adding that none of them dared approach it.
> A worker at a pet hotel in Sichuan, China, caused an uproar online for refusing to apologise for the death of an animal under his care, the daily also reported.
Apparently, he dismissed the incident, saying: “It was just the death of a dog.”
The dog’s owner had left his pet in the care of the hotel, as he had to travel for work between Aug 19 and 25.
He was shocked to receive a call on Aug 25 that his dog had died.
A friend who visited the pet hotel and reviewed CCTV footage found that in the six days the dog was there, it was only given water on three occasions, with the longest interval being 66 hours.
The friend confronted the hotel worker, who was apparently dismissive about it.
This led to an argument between the two of them.
The hotel initially offered 15,000 yuan (RM8,867) in compensation and promised that the employee involved would be fired.
However, when the owner visited the hotel the next day, he was furious to find the worker still there.
The frustrated dog owner subsequently refused the compensation and instead shared his story on social media.
His post blew up and forced the hotel to issue an explanation, saying that they suspected that the dog had died of disease, not dehydration.
