ALOR SETAR: The proposal that Perikatan Nasional’s prime minister should be below 70 years old will resonate with young voters and boost the coalition’s chances in the 16th General Election, say PAS leaders.
The proposal was made yesterday by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang at the party’s 71st muktamar (national assembly).
The issue of Perikatan’s candidate for prime minister was sparked recently by Bersatu’s decision to nominate its own president, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is 78, to the post. Bersatu is PAS’ partner in Perikatan.
PAS deputy youth chief Mohd Hafez Sabri said that although the party president’s statement was brief, it reflects the Islamist party’s serious commitment to introduce fresh leadership in the Federal Government.
“It also reflects the party’s determination not to rely solely on ‘recycled’ or long-serving figures but to put forward candidates who are more capable, dynamic, and competitive,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Earlier, Abdul Hadi admitted that he was not qualified to be the next prime minister because of his age and health.
He said the role is better suited to those under age 70 who are strong, healthy and able to work with the people on the ground.
“I am already 78 years old. Someone like me is no longer suitable. Choose the healthiest first. Those under 70 are stronger.
“That is how PAS selects its leaders,” said the PAS president.
Mohd Hafez said the stance would be well-received by the younger generation, as it demonstrates PAS’s openness to empowering a new wave of leaders who are ready to take on national responsibilities.
“Such an approach not only shows strategic political foresight but also reinforces PAS’s sincerity in championing renewal and progressive change for the country,” he said.
Kuala Terengganu MP Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim also expressed his support for the proposal.
He said that it was a clear signal of Abdul Hadi’s readiness to give way when the time comes for Perikatan to form the Federal Government.
“Abdul Hadi himself prefers a younger leader with no health issues and strong integrity to lead the nation.
“These characteristics reflect the qualities necessary if Perikatan is truly committed and serious about working hard towards national recovery and building a prosperous, stable Malaysia in line with the people’s mandate.
“What is needed now is a leader who works diligently, upholds integrity, and is not burdened by health problems. The challenges facing the country today demand such a figure,” he said.
