Storm brings more landslides and floods in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The ongoing storm affecting various districts across the state continues to cause new landslides and floods.

Papar and Membakut districts are the latest to be declared disaster areas on Monday (Sept 15), with floods displacing villagers.

Many areas have reported landslides, including hills in the city and its surrounding areas of Sepanggar and Penampang.

Floods are also reported in low-lying residential and commercial areas such as Damai, Luyang, Penampang, Beaufort and now Papar, among other places.

Those already affected by mudfloods have had to delay cleaning work because of the persistent rain.

Water disruptions continue to affect flood-hit places, while power supply to parts of Sabah’s east coast, such as Tawau, has yet to be restored due to a fallen tower grid in Penampang which supplies electricity to the east coast.

Emergency response units such as the Fire Department, Civil Defence and police continue to respond to cases, while non-governmental organisations are teaming up with individuals and politicians to assist flood victims.

As of 8am, 415 people from 113 families in Penampang, Tawau and Beaufort remain in temporary shelters, but more are expected to be registered as new relief centres in Papar and Membakut are activated.
