Kluang bridge cracks under observation

KLUANG: The cracks found along a bridge at Jalan Mardi pose no danger, says state executive councillor Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

The Johor public works, transport, infrastructure and communication committee chairman said the cracks on the bridge linking Simpang Renggam and Kluang here were first spotted in 2023.

“Initial reports suggested the cracks were caused by settlement (slight sinking or movement) between the deck slab (road surface) and the abutment (bridge support).

“The cracks have remained unchanged with no increase in size based on observations by the concessionaire between 2023 and 2025.

“This indicates that there has been no alarming change so far,” he said in a Facebook statement on Saturday (Sept 13).

He added that the Kluang Public Works Department has been monitoring the cracks, and repair works on the bridge are expected to begin early next month.

“Repair works are scheduled to start on Oct 1 and are expected to be completed by Nov 30 this year.

“The department has also consulted the Geotechnical Division to review the substructure, and any additional repairs will be covered under the concessionaire’s allocation,” he said.

He said the planned works will cover the upper part of the bridge and the installation of small drainage holes to improve water flow.

Mohamad Fazli’s statement comes after photos showing cracks on the bridge made the rounds on social media, prompting road users to exercise caution and call on the authorities to take swift action.
