Labourer killed in excavation accident at UMS in KK


KOTA KINABALU: A labourer was killed after he was buried underneath piles of soil during excavation work at Universiti Malaysia Sabah near here.

The 22-year-old was digging and burying pipes at the compound when the ditch he was in collapsed.

When contacted, firemen rushed to the scene and managed to find his body about 10ft deep.

Kota Kinabalu Fire Station chief Ordine Gilu said they received a distress call at around 1.45pm and arrived at the scene at around 2.03pm.

"Rescuers dug out the victim and handed his body over to the police for further action," he said, adding that health officials on site pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Operations at the site ended at 2.50pm and no other injuries were reported.
