KUALA LUMPUR: Amid rising concerns over bullying in schools, an Opposition MP has called on the government to reintroduce caning as a disciplinary measure for problematic students.
Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN–Hulu Terengganu) questioned the Education Ministry's effectiveness in addressing the growing problem of bullying.
"I propose the caning of students as part of the punishment for problematic students.
During our time, caning was used in schools, and it acted as a deterrent,” he said.
“However, today, the ministry seems more focused on appeasing parents. That is why teachers cannot educate," added Datuk Rosol while debating the Parliamentary Special Select Committee (PSSC) on Women, Children and Community Development’s proposals to tackle bullying.
Rosol, a former teacher, said there are many ways to educate students from all backgrounds.
"I speak from experience—there are excellent, average and weak students. There are many ways to teach and discipline, and a one-size-fits-all approach does not work.
The previous education system shaped us and made us who we are," he said.
Rosol also said films on Netflix and in cinemas have contributed to bullying among students.
"Films and content on platforms like Netflix often portray bullying and hazing as normal behaviour.
The influence cannot be ignored, as it subtly shapes the mindset of students.
Addressing bullying must not fall solely on schools; it requires a whole-of-society approach," he said.
