Not ladies first, when it comes to parking in Kulai, says local govt

KULAI: There is no urgent need to introduce “ladies parking” or “pink parking” at commercial areas and shopping malls within the Kulai district, says the Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu).

Its president Mohd Hafiz Aliman said the council would focus on having adequate parking lots for persons with disabilities (PwD).

He said apart from the parking reserved for disabled individuals, the council also wanted to see more parking spots for senior citizens with mobility issues.

“Parking spaces for PwD and senior citizens with mobility issues are more important and should be given priority over others," Hafiz said when met after its full council meeting at Menara PMKu near here on Tuesday (Aug 26).

In Malaysia, the obligation for mall owners to provide adequate PwD parking stems from the Road Transport Act 1987, various local by-laws and design standards.

Under the Malaysian Standards MS 1184, which mandate accessible design for buildings to ensure proper allocation and dimensions for PwD parking bays.

He was commenting on the suggestion made by the Hutan Bandar Zone councillor Nadia Aziz, requesting MPKu to introduce “pink parking” within its jurisdiction.

In Malaysia, pink parking spaces are a type of ladies’ parking designed to enhance the safety of lone female drivers, particularly in isolated or poorly lit areas of shopping malls and commercial buildings.

These zones, marked by pink paint, offer increased security and are intended to reduce the risk of crimes like snatch thefts and assaults.
