Speaker orders probe into MP’s alleged fight challenge

DEWAN Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul (pic) says that he will conduct a comprehensive investigation and make a ruling on Monday over claims that an opposition MP had challenged other lawmakers to a physical fight outside the House.

He ordered all video and voice recording units within the Dewan Rakyat to be surrendered as evidence for him to investigate the claims.

“I have instructed all relevant parliamentary units, including those responsible for video and audio recordings, to gather evidence related to the incident,” Johari told the MPs.

“If there is any evidence that such an act happened or threats to demand a fight, I will take stern action.”

He was responding to a question raised by Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka), who wanted the Speaker to make a ruling regarding the safety of those at Parliament House following claims that an MP had “invited another MP to come outside of the Dewan Rakyat to fight”.

Johari warned the lawmakers that although they might switch off their microphones, the videos within the Dewan Rakyat were still on.

“I know you are all politicians, but if you threaten others with physical threats, then you have crossed the line.

“I do not want to accuse anybody, but I have ordered a thorough investigation.

“I will make a ruling on Monday,” he said.

On Wednesday, the Dewan Rakyat descended into chaos when PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang (PN-Marang) implied during his debate that Kuala Lumpur’s problems were due to DAP and the unity government.

Khoo had asked the Speaker to make a ruling on the issue and called for action against Datuk Awang Solahuddin Hashim (PN-Pendang).

“It was broadcast worldwide, (and) everyone saw what happened in the Dewan Rakyat. When we talk about bullying, it must be taken seriously.

“Pendang wanted to fight another MP. This is an example of behaviour that should never happen,” said Khoo.
