KUALA LUMPUR: Umno will send a protest note to all leaderships of parties in the Malaysian Unity Government that have either permitted or are planning to permit Umno members to join their ranks, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki (pic).
The party secretary-general said the protest served as a stern warning that such moves, if left unchecked, could strain relations among coalition partners.
“This protest is a strong warning, as failure to address it can worsen ties between parties in the Unity Government coalition,” Asyraf Wajdi said after the party’s Supreme Council meeting on Wednesday (Aug 13).
The move comes in the wake of recent political realignments, including Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz’s exit from the party.
Zafrul, who is Investment, Trade and Industry Minister under the Unity Government, announced in May that he had left Umno to join PKR, sparking discontent within Umno over the perceived poaching of its members.
Meanwhile, on the upcoming Sabah state election, Asyraf Wajdi said discussions on cooperation were already underway.
“We are constantly refining matters related to seat allocations as well as ongoing negotiations.
“With Pakatan Harapan, that has been finalised. With other coalitions, it will depend on negotiations that will continue in the near future,” he said.
