KLANG: Selangor Ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has advised the public to not create baseless narratives regarding judicial appointments.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ruler said the process outlined under the Federal Constitution for judicial appointments must be carried out transparently and carefully to preserve the rule of law and uphold the principles of justice, which form the core of the nation’s governance.
“In line with this, all parties are urged to avoid making any negative speculations or allegations without obtaining complete and accurate facts about any matter,” said Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Ruler said one of the main agendas discussed at the recent Conference of Rulers’ pre-council meeting was consultations on judicial appointments.
The royal discussions revolved around the appointment of the Chief Justice, Court of Appeal President, Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak, as well as judges of the higher courts, said His Royal Highness.
“In the process of the consultation, I had emphasised the need to comply with every provision of the law, especially under Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, which outlines the process and procedures for the appointment of senior judges of higher courts,” added Sultan Sharafuddin.
The Selangor Sultan had chaired the Rulers’ pre-council meeting held on July 15, which was followed by the 269th Conference of Rulers the following day.
Sultan Sharafuddin also said he fully supported Istana Negara’s statement dated July 10, which said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can appoint the Chief Judge, Court of Appeal President and other key judicial positions upon the advice of the Prime Minister and after consultation with the Council of Rulers.
