Vietnamese nationals charged in JB with trafficking 38kg of MDMA

JOHOR BARU: Two Vietnamese nationals, a man and a woman, have been charged in a Magistrate's Court here with drug trafficking and possession.

On the drug trafficking charge, male accused Lee Yuen Fei, 45, and Trieu Thi Mai, 22, are alleged to have trafficked 38,022g (38kg) of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) at 8.20pm at Jalan Seri Orkid 25, Taman Seri Orkid on June 14.

However, no plea was recorded and the accused only nodded in acknowledgment after the charges were read out to them on Thursday (June 26).

This is because the case, framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which provides for the death sentence, or life imprisonment and no fewer than 15 strokes of the cane upon conviction, is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

They were also charged with possession of a dangerous drug, ketamine, weighing 1,375g,  at the same location and time.

The charge, under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or a maximum prison sentence of five years, or both, upon conviction.

The court set Aug 26 for mention. – Bernama
