‘I don’t have ties to PKR’

PUTRAJAYA: Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail says he had never joined any political party in his 38-year career with the police force.

The newly appointed IGP was clarifying a recent social media infographic post by Sinar Harian that mistakenly linked him to PKR.

“As you know, PKR secretary-general Datuk Fuziah Salleh has clarified the issue.

“I accept what has happened with an open heart.

“God willing, the newspaper involved has requested to meet me and I will meet with them soon,” he told reporters at the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here yesterday.

Mohd Khalid said he hoped the close and strong relationship between the police and the media would not be affected.

“We need accurate reporting, not just for the police force but for all government agencies.

“The government will continue to engage in discussions, listen to opinions and provide what is necessary.

“We will meet,” he said, adding that the meeting date has yet to be confirmed.

Mohd Khalid was appointed the 15th IGP, taking over from Tan Sri Razarudin Husain last Friday.

Hailing from Manong in Perak, he joined the police force in 1987.

He served as a police attache at the Malaysian High Commission in London from 2014 to 2018.

After that, he returned to Malaysia to lead the Pahang Special Branch and was promoted to become Bukit Aman Special Branch director in 2023.

Sinar Harian has apologised for the error, explaining that it was due to the use of an old graphic template.

The daily said a staff member in its Social Media Unit had reused the old design template for a graphic involving Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul.

The staff member responsible and the supervising officer who approved the infographic have been suspended pending the outcome of the investigations, the publication added.

Despite the apology, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said investigations into the matter would continue.
