Lorry driver and attendant killed in crash on NSE

BATU PAHAT: A lorry driver and his assistant were killed on the spot in an accident involving three heavy vehicles at KM81.9 North-South Expressway (NSE) on Thursday (June 12).

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the incident took place at 8.30am along the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat stretch (southbound).

He said the victim's lorry transporting electronic goods crashed into the back of a timber lorry, which then hit an oil tanker.

“The goods lorry driver and attendant suffered severe injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Yong Peng Health Clinic," ACP Shahrulanuar said in a statement on Friday (June 13).

He said the deceased were identified as R. Pubalan, 45, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, the driver; and the 35-year-old lorry attendant R. Sivasanthiran, from Bedong, also in Kedah.

ACP Shahrulanuar Mushaddat said the 37-year-old driver of the timber lorry sustained minor injuries and was sent for treatment at Hospital Sultanah Nora Ismail here.

“The 42-year-old driver of the oil tanker escaped unhurt," he said, adding that the incident is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
