Zafrul denies claims of by-election as factor behind Umno exit


PETALING JAYA: Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz denies that his decision to leave Umno hinged on his participation in a by-election.

The Investment, Trade and Industry Minister said he disagreed with holding unnecessary by-elections as it involved the people's money and time.

"There was no discussion about my involvement in any by-election, whether at federal or state level.

"This was not part of my decision-making process (to leave Umno)," he said in a statement shared on social media on Monday (June 9).

Tengku Zafrul said he intends to fulfil his responsibilities as Senator until his term concludes in December 2025 and the status of ministerial position is at the discretion of the Prime Minister.

"I left the corporate world with the intention of serving. As long as my service is required, I am ready to continue contributing, regardless if I hold any position," he said.

Tengku Zafrul also reiterated that his departure from Umno was a personal choice and free from external pressure.

Tengku Zafrul, who recently completed the haj, also expressed gratitude to those who supported him throughout his political career.

"I extend my deepest appreciation to the Umno president, friends from the party supreme council and the grassroots, especially the Kota Raja Umno division, for their unwavering support," he said.

"Please pray that I remain steadfast in my journey, with a renewed spirit from the Holy Land," he said.
