KUALA TERENGGANU: Eight baby monocled cobras have been found in the kitchen of a house in Kampung Banggol Katong here.
Muhammad Aslam Husseini Mohd Taufik, 29, said he was having a drink in the kitchen on Tuesday (May 27) when he noticed the venomous reptile just inches away from his feet.
"I thought it was a non-venomous baby snake so I killed it and disposed of the carcass. I didn't suspect anything because it was a small and didn't raise its head," he said when met at his home on Thursday (May 29).
However, Muhammad Aslam, who runs a local coffee business, said he spotted five more baby snakes behind the kitchen door while preparing to cook on Wednesday (May 29) evening.
"I immediately contacted the Civil Defence Force as one of the baby cobras raised its head and spread its hood," he said.
He said Civil Defence Force personnel then came to remove the baby cobras.
"However, about three hours later, I found two more baby cobras in the kitchen and called them again," he said.
He said he then asked his wife Shafiqah Areesa Ramlan, 28, who is six months pregnant, to go back to her father's house as a precautionary measure.
He said this was the first time they had encountered baby cobras since moving into the rented house two years ago.
Kuala Nerus Civil Defence Force operations officer Lieutenant (PA) Nor Dahlia Razelan said they received the first call at 5.15pm and the second call at 8.20 pm.
She said it took about 15 to 20 minutes to capture the baby snakes in both operations.
"Although the baby cobras are small, they are extremely dangerous and their bite can be fatal," she said, adding there was an added risk as the caller's wife was heavily pregnant.
She said the baby cobras would be handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further action. – Bernama
