Malaysia, Turkiye to boost ties on family policy

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Turkiye are committed to enhancing cooperation in family policy and inclusive social services through a proposed memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the two countries.

Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the matter was discussed during a meeting with her Turkish counterpart, Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas yesterday.

She added that the meeting provided an opportunity for both parties to discuss shared challenges related to family issues, including declining birth rates and evolving family structures.

“We also exchanged best practices, including incentives for newlyweds and parents in Turkiye, as well as Malaysian initiatives such as the birth savings schemes and efforts to strengthen the institution of marriage,” she said in a Facebook post, Bernama reported.

Nancy said Malaysia also proposed an MOU on women’s digital empowerment, as well as community-based care for children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

She added that the initiative would align with Malaysia’s commitment to strengthening a more inclusive social development agenda, particularly in its role as Asean Chair this year.
