KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Electricity needs the cooperation from all stakeholders to support and not stop efforts to generate more power supply in the state.
Its chairman Datuk Seri Madius Tangau said to meet the increasing demand, the Energy Commission has, in principle, approved for another run-off river scheme at the Pangi Hydroelectric power plant site.
This would allow power generation to increase to over 400KW, almost 500KW, he said at the launching of the re-operation of the Pangi Hydroelectric Plant in Tenom on Wednesday (May 14).
“And since we have been briefed that the Pangi hydroelectric plant is not the cause of floods into Beaufort (as what the public, especially Beaufort folks have been accusing), we hope there will be no objections from the ground,” he said.
Citing an example, Madius said the Pangi Hydroelectric flooding and landslide incident was partially due to human activities while the subsequent and frequent floods, which hit districts like Beaufort, was not from Pangi.
He said the Pangi hydroelectric plant does not release water as it is not a dam, hence does not contribute to floods.
“So we hope people won’t stage protests or object to initiatives or projects to generate more power supply,” he said.
With plans such as the 100MW Battery Energy Storage system in Lahad Datu, Rental Gas project in Kimanis and Kimanis power plant, Madius is confident Sabah would hit its target of 20% reserve by this year.
