JB cops probing video of assault in mall

JOHOR BARU: Police are investigating an alleged assault on a man by a group at a shopping mall here.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat said the incident, believed to have occurred at about 10.30pm on Saturday (May 10), came to light after video footage of the assault went viral on social media.

"Upon receiving information about the incident, the Johor Baru South police headquarters... opened an investigation," he said in a statement on Monday (May 12).

ACP Raub said police are now working to identify the victim and have urged him, as well as any witnesses, to come forward and help with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

Earlier, two videos – each lasting around one minute – were uploaded on Facebook by a user under the name Armpunk.Sindicate.

The footage shows a group of men waiting outside a toilet before dragging, punching and kicking a man wearing a white T-shirt.

One of the suspects also strikes the victim with a metal rubbish bin.
