That stinks: Driver loses control of car, careens into sewage plant

KOTA KINABALU: A mother and son had a stinky mishap when the car they were travelling in fell into a sewage plant along Taman Kingfisher near here Friday (May 9).

The driver, 49, had lost control of the car he was driving with his 79-year-old mother, and had accidentally plunged into the sewage pond at around 8am.

Luckily, several passers-by, including an off-duty fireman who saw them as he drove by, assisted the victims to safety.

Lintas Fire and Rescue Department station chief Agustavia Joe Guasi said both victims were trapped in the car and had to wait for help to arrive before they could get out.

"An off-duty fireman, Hasrulnizam Zain, had assisted the victims by holding out a long wooden stick to them," she said when contacted.

She said the elderly woman had gotten out of the car through the back door and held on to the stick to clamber to safety while the man had escaped via the driver's seat window.

He had also clung onto the stick that was held out and got up to the bank safely, said Agustavia.

Earlier, she said the department received a distress call at around 8.28am, and a team was sent to respond.

Agustavia said firemen were on site to monitor the situation thereafter, as the vehicle was towed by a private company.

No other injuries were reported.
