Foreigners charged with using fake MyKads jailed, two others plead not guilty

SEREMBAN: Five Filipinos were sent to jail after they pleaded guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to charges of using fake Malaysian identity cards or having copies of identification documents belonging to others.

Brothers Johari Camal, 38, and Peter Camal, 45, and Ajid Hasan, 43, were sentenced to five months in jail, while Aisa Hamjalin Katang, 40, and Rasid Olek, 27, were to be jailed for two months.

The five were charged separately before magistrates Nurul Saqinah Rosli dan Saiful Sayoti.

They were charged with committing the offence between 7pm and 9.30pm on May 6 in Nilai.

The accused were charged under Rule 25(1)(e) of the National Registration Department Regulations 1990, which carries a jail term of not more than three years or a fine of not more than RM20,000 or both upon conviction.

In mitigation, the five who were unrepresented asked the courts for lenient sentences as they had families to provide for.

Prosecuting officers Zulkarnain Ahmad, Md Shahedan Md Taib and Hairul Azlin Ahmad, who represented the National Registration Department, asked the courts to impose a heavy punishment as their actions could compromise national security.

Another individual, Alvin Faisal, 31 and a woman claiming to be his wife, Alsaida Hassan, 28, however, pleaded not guilty when charged for the same offence.

The couple's lawyer Sarabmeet Singh told the court that both the accused were Bajaus from Sabah.

The court then allowed Alvin to be released on a RM6,000 bail with two local sureties. His wife was not offered bail.

The court fixed June 1 for mention
