Anwar confirms candidacy for PKR president

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed he will defend his position as PKR president in the party’s internal elections at the end of this month.

The Prime Minister, however, said he has yet to submit his nomination formally.

“I haven’t registered yet. The president’s slot is still empty… I’ll fill the form later,” he told reporters on Friday (May 9).

Anwar said this after lunch at the Kampung Pandan Kari Kepala Ikan Termasyhur restaurant in Putrajaya.

When asked about the apparent majority support from PKR divisions for Nurul Izzah Anwar to contest the deputy presidency, Anwar declined to comment further.

As anticipated, Anwar will defend his post, but the deputy presidency could shape the real contest this election.

At least 11 nominations for the four vice-president posts have already been received for the party election, scheduled for May 21.

No official nominations have been received for the deputy presidency so far, but anticipation is growing that a contest may emerge.

Anwar has led PKR since 1999 and is widely credited with steering the party through decades of opposition politics before becoming Prime Minister in 2022.
