Couple nabbed over Shah Alam jewellery shop heist

SHAH ALAM: A couple was detained in connection with a jewellery shop heist here last month, which resulted in over RM100,000 in losses.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the 25-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were detained in Bandar Puncak Alam at about 3.20pm on Friday.

“Some of the jewellery had been pawned and sold but we managed to recover them in Klang.

“We also seized the suspects’ mobile phones. Both suspects are jobless and they did not have any prior criminal records,” he said in a statement.

The suspects have been remanded until today, he added.

“We believe both of them needed the money (from the sale of the stolen jewellery) to start a new life together.

“We are investigating under Section 380 of the Penal Code,” he said.

He urged those with information to contact assistant investigating officer Sjn Prabagaran Nair at 011-26294419.

It was reported that over RM100,000 in valuables were swiped after a couple robbed a jewellery store here.

ACP Mohd Iqbal had said that the heist happened on April 26 where the two suspects had entered the shop under the pretense of buying jewellery.

“When the complainant was busy showing the wares of the shop, the female suspect then stole several pieces without the worker’s knowledge.

“The loss of jewellery was only noticed after inspecting the CCTV footage, which showed the woman in the act while the worker was not paying attention,” he said.
