Couple detained over Shah Alam jewelry heist

SHAH ALAM: A couple were detained in connection with a jewelry shop heist here last month, resulting in losses exceeding RM100,000.

Shah Alam police chief Asst Comm Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the 25-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were detained in Bandar Puncak Alam at about 3.20pm last Friday (May 2).

"We also seized mobile phones and the stolen jewelry.

"Both suspects are jobless and they did not have any prior criminal records," he said in a statement on Sunday (May 4).

The suspects have been remanded until Monday (May 5), he added.

"We are investigating under Section 380 of the Penal Code.

"We urge those with information to contact assistant investigating officer Sjn Prabagaran Nair at 011-2629 4419," he said.

It was reported that over RM100,000 in valuables were stolen after a couple robbed a jewelry store here.

ACP Mohd Iqbal said the incident occurred on April 26, where the two suspects entered the shop under the pretense of buying jewelry.

"When the complainant was busy showing the wares, the female suspect stole several pieces without the worker's knowledge. The loss was only noticed after inspecting the CCTV footage, which showed the woman in the act while the worker was not paying attention," he said.

The stolen jewelry included two gold rings and three necklaces, with total losses estimated at RM111,743.55.

"The male suspect was wearing a red cap and sunglasses, while the female suspect was wearing a white cap and a face mask. Efforts to trace down both suspects are underway," he said.
