KUALA LUMPUR: Graft busters received intelligence on smuggling of hazardous items through the cargo at the KL International Airport (KLIA), believed to have elements of corruption.
Sources said the smuggling of the items leave the airport vulnerable to various security issues especially the two fire incidents last year.
"We received the information on the smuggling activity earlier this year and we have since opened an investigation.
"Initial investigations revealed that several hazardous items, including chemicals were smuggled into the country by declaring it as household items," source said.
Sources said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is investigating the companies and other parties involved.
"We will also identify weaknesses in governance that caused the hazardous items to smuggled into the country.
"MACC will cooperate with the airport's management as well as other enforcement agencies. The MACC is not ruling out the possibility of calling up certain parties to assist with the investigation," sources said.
Meanwhile, MACC senior director (Intelligence) Datuk Idris Zaharudin confirmed the investigation is being conducted.
"We are investigating under Section 16 of the MACC Act 2009," he said when contacted.
