Four arrested, over RM100,000 in drugs seized in Penang police raids

GEORGE TOWN: Police have crushed a drug trafficking syndicate following the arrest of four individuals, including a foreign woman, and the seizure of drugs worth RM100,500 in a series of raids.

State police chief Comm Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the raids were carried out by the Central Seberang Perai Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department on Tuesday (April 29).

"The suspects, aged between 26 and 47, were arrested in separate operations at various locations across Seberang Jaya, Bukit Mertajam, and Penang island," he said in a statement on Wednesday (April 30).

During the operation, police seized a black plastic package containing 12 transparent packets believed to contain heroin, weighing 5,048g and valued at RM48,000.

Comm Hamzah said a bag with eight more packets of suspected heroin, weighing about 2,956g, and worth RM28,800 was also seized.

Other items seized were six packets of methamphetamine, weighing 706g with a street value of RM18,000; two packets containing compressed dried leaves, believed to be cannabis, weighing 156g and valued at RM4,680; and a packet of caffeine weighing 3,184g, estimated to be worth RM1,020.

The seized drugs could have supplied approximately 433,000 drug users.

Comm Hamzah said preliminary investigations indicate that the syndicate had been active since the end of last year.

Urine tests revealed two of the suspects were drug-positive, while three had prior criminal and drug-related records.

In addition to the narcotics, police also confiscated a car, two motorcycles, and jewellery, with a combined value of RM66,490.

All four suspects have been remanded for seven days until May 6 to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
