Free replacement documents for Kampung Kijang fire victims, says NRD

KOTA BARU: The National Registration Department (NRD) has stepped in to provide free identification document replacement for victims affected by the Kampung Kijang fire incident on Monday.

Kelantan NRD director Halimatusaadiah Ramli @ Mohd Shah said a mobile van from the Mekar team was dispatched to assist victims whose documents were damaged or destroyed in the incident.

"As of noon Tuesday (April 29), three victims, currently taking shelter at the Al-Aminin Mosque in Kampung Kijang, have received replacements for their identification documents.

"We anticipate more affected residents will come forward to use this service. The assigned Mekar team will remain on-site until the replacement process for all victims is completed," she said in a statement on Tuesday.

Monday (April 28), it was reported that eight houses were destroyed in the fire at Kampung Kijang, leaving 31 victims from eight families homeless.

One of the victims,  Nur Zetty Salinda, 18, said that she did not have time to save her identification documents when the house she shared with her parents,  Zainun Mat Daud, 55, and Mat Husin Sulaiman, 61, was engulfed in flames.

"It happened at about 4.45pm. I was in the living room and suddenly noticed the fire had already spread to one of the rooms. There was no time to grab my wallet, where I kept my identification card. I’m grateful that the NRD came forward to provide free replacement services for victims like us,” she said.

Meanwhile, Setawa Mahmood, 87, expressed his appreciation for the NRD's prompt assistance, saying it greatly eased the burden for elderly residents.

"I am grateful that the NRD sent its team to us. At my age, it would have been difficult to go to the NRD office. This service has lifted our worries, especially about losing important documents in the fire,” he said.- Bernama
