Delivery riders take down serial snatcher

MELAKA: A group of food delivery riders successfully apprehended a serial snatch thief following a brief chase, said Melaka police.

The state’s top cop, Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said yesterday that the incident unfolded when the 31-year-old suspect snatched the belongings of a 70-year-old man outside a supermarket in Malim at around 12.30pm on April 23.

“Personnel from the state police headquarters and the Malim police station were able to track down the suspect and subsequently attempted to arrest him.

“However, the suspect fled the scene on his motorcycle upon spotting the officers. A group of food delivery riders witnessed the commotion and gave chase.”

DCP Dzulkhairi added that the riders managed to intercept and surround the suspect, eventually handing him over to the authorities.

“The suspect was successfully detained within approximately 30 minutes after the pursuit.”

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the man is believed to be involved in at least five snatch theft cases across the state, said DCP Dzulkhairi.

“A drug screening of the suspect also returned a positive result,” he said.
